Boulders Beach, located near Simon’s Town in South Africa, is famous for its resident population of African penguins. These penguins, also known as Jackass penguins due to their donkey-like braying sound, have made Boulders Beach their home since the early 1980s. The beach offers visitors the rare opportunity to get up close to these charming birds in their natural habitat.
The penguins thrive in the area because of the relatively warm waters of the False Bay, which are ideal for their survival. The beach and surrounding area are part of a protected nature reserve, and visitors can enjoy walking along boardwalks to observe the penguins without disturbing them. The penguins’ black and white plumage, coupled with the stunning backdrop of large granite boulders and turquoise water, makes for a picturesque setting.
